How it works

  1. Pick the rules

The match opens on the rules: how many games, points per game, win by how many, side-out or rally scoring. By default one game to 11, win by 2.

  2. Name the players

Tap Edit names to choose singles or doubles and type each player's name. Singles or doubles can change only before the first rally; names can change at any time.

  3. Tap the side that won the rally

The app adds the point, passes the serve or calls the side-out by the rules, and shows the score in the order a referee calls it. Tapped the wrong side? Undo.

  4. A reload keeps the match

Every rally is saved on this device. Reload the page or lock the screen, open it again and the match carries on. When it is over, tap New match to start again.

How pickleball scoring works

By default the app uses side-out scoring: only the serving side can score. If the serving side wins the rally it gets 1 point and serves again. If the receiving side wins, nobody scores and the serve moves on.

In doubles each side has two servers: when the first server loses the rally the partner serves, and only when the second server loses is it a side-out, with the serve going to the other side. At the start of each game the side serving first has one server only, so the opening score is 0-0-2. The score is called in order: the serving side's points, the receiving side's points, then which server, for example 5-3-2.

The first server of each turn stands in the right-hand court. In singles the server serves from the right when their score is even and from the left when it is odd. In doubles the two players on the serving side swap courts each time they score. The app tracks where every player stands, so it always shows the right server and the right court.

A game ends when one side reaches the game's points and leads by at least the win-by margin. By default that is 11, win by 2: 11-9 ends it, 11-10 plays on until one side leads by 2, such as 12-10. In the next game the sides change ends, the other side serves first and the time-outs start again.

The rules the app opens on

  • One game to 11 points, win by 2, side-out scoring.
  • Choose 1, 3, 5 or 7 games, 1 to 30 points a game, win by 1 to 5.
  • Rally scoring: every rally scores and the rally winner serves next. In doubles only one player serves each turn and the score has two numbers, such as 5-3.
  • Change ends mid-game when one side reaches 6 points. You can count the two sides' total instead, change only in the last game, or turn it off.
  • Each side has 2 time-outs a game, 1 minute each. A 2-minute break each time the sides change ends.

Frequently asked questions

Is this pickleball scoring app free? Do I need an account?

It is free and needs no account. Open the page in your phone's browser, tap Start scoring and you are keeping score. There is nothing to install.

Where is the score saved? Do I lose it if I reload?

The score is saved in the browser on the device you are scoring on, after every rally. Reload the page or come back later and the match carries on where it was. Each device keeps one match; New match clears it. Clearing your browser data clears the match too.

Can other people follow the score live?

No. A quick match lives only on the device scoring it: nothing is sent to SportX, nothing syncs to another device and there is no link to share. To let people follow results live from one link, create a tournament on SportX.

In doubles, how does the app know who serves?

Before the first rally you pick the side that serves first and swap the two players on a side if needed. From then on the app keeps track: when the serving side scores its players swap courts, when the first server loses the rally the partner serves, and when the second server loses it is a side-out and the player in the right-hand court on the other side serves. The screen shows the score as 5-3-2 and marks who is serving.

Can I change the rules, say best of 3 games to 15?

Yes, before the first rally. The match opens on the rules: pick the number of games (1, 3, 5 or 7), points per game, win by how many, side-out or rally scoring and the number of time-outs. Once the match has started these rules are locked so the score is never recounted; when to change ends and the break lengths can still be adjusted.
