What is a round robin?

In a round robin, every team plays every other team. The team with the most points after all the matches finishes first.

It is fair because everyone faces every opponent and nobody goes out early after one loss. The cost is that the number of matches grows quickly as you add teams.

Matches and rounds at a glance

  • Matches in one leg: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2. For example, 6 teams play 15 matches.
  • Rounds: n − 1 with an even number of teams, n with an odd number (one team has a bye each round).
  • Double round robin: twice the matches and twice the rounds.

Frequently asked questions

How many matches in an 8-team round robin?

28 matches over 7 rounds, 4 matches a round. The formula is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2, where n is the number of teams.

What happens with an odd number of teams?

One team sits out each round, and every team gets exactly one bye. With 5 teams there are 5 rounds of 2 matches.

When should I play a double round robin?

When there are few teams and enough time, or when home and away matter. The second leg repeats the first with the sides swapped.

How do I split many teams into groups?

Set the most teams per group and the tool makes the fewest groups that fit, with group sizes at most one apart. Teams go in list order: group A takes the first ones, then group B. To keep seeds apart, order the list before you paste it.

How are ties in the standings broken?

Usually by head-to-head, then point or goal difference, then points or goals scored. On SportX you choose the order for each tournament and the standings work it out.
